I’m sure many people have heard of sex dolls, but I never knew they existed until I started hearing about one near me. I live in 19124, right outside of Philadelphia, and this is something that’s seriously shook me up a bit. I mean, I’m not sure what to make of it – hitting a bit too close to home, I suppose. And from what I heard, these dolls are realistic enough to pass for human.
It was interesting to hear what people were saying about the presence of the doll. My neighbor thought it was a sign of perversion, while some of my friends thought it was a bit ‘Hollywood’. I mean, it’s certainly true that this could indicate some unattractive qualities, but it also could just be indicative of someone’s curiosity or interest in exploring something new and unique.
For me, though, there’s something really discomforting about the concept. Sure, I’m no prude, but I can’t get my head around the idea of there being a robot that looks like a person, that is used to fulfill a sexual need. It’s just too much for me.
However, I was also thinking about it from an empathy angle in that some people lack the relational ability to attract the kinds of partners that they feel they need, so the availability of a sex doll could be a way for dildos someone to explore their sexuality without feeling like they’re endangering someone else in the process. Additionally, sex dolls could help people explore a variety of different fantasies with anonymity, minus the fear of judgment from peers.
All this really got me thinking about consent and boundaries. It’s true that while I might find the idea of a sex doll uncomfortable or even unsettling, maybe this isn’t such a bad thing. In a society that is often so quick to judge, then maybe this could promote consent in that it provides an environment where someone can explore their sexuality minus the fear of judgment.
I guess it’s like any other kind of sexual exploration, in that it could be something positive as long as it’s done responsibly. But, at the same time, it can be dangerous if it’s used to take advantage of people or cross boundaries without their consent.
Another thing that I found really interesting was the variety of different sex dolls that now exists. I mean, it’s not just limited to human forms, there’s a whole array of different shapes and sizes. Reading through the different types that are available really made me realize that there’s something for every taste.
It also made me think about the ethical implications of such a device. I mean, you’d think that the production of something like this could be quite detrimental to society. And sure, it might be seen as exploitative, but it also exists to fulfil the needs of people who can’t find what they’re looking for in other areas of their life.
I guess ultimately, the use of sex dolls depend on the person using it. In the right hands, it could be an entirely harmless thing, but if it’s used to harm or exploit someone else, then things could quickly turn sour. After all, just because something is available, it doesn’t mean it should be used.
Personally, I’m still struggling to get my head around the concept and don’t think I could ever be comfortable with it. But, just like with anything, understanding helps to remove judgment. So, perhaps my opinion will change one day.
